In 1983, Don recognized his fledgling career in nuclear plant structural engineering was not looking promising, so he opted for job security in the form of a Master’s Degree in Transportation Engineering from NCSU, supplemented with planning coursework at UNC’s DCRP. He then did long-range transportation modelling, forecasting, and planning for NCDOT, followed by a stint managing Transportation Planning and Engineering for the City of Greensboro. In the late 1990’s, Don took up consulting, as well as teaching at Duke University. In 2000, he helped found Martin/Alexiou/Bryson, a transportation planning and engineering consultancy acquired by VHB in 2013. As a Principal with VHB, Don remains active in a wide range of projects, including multimodal regional, corridor, and small area plans; campus master plans; feasibility studies; parking studies; and special event transportation planning and management. His recent work has focused on applying “big data” analyses to transportation planning, especially in support of transit, bicycle, and walk modes. Don enjoys a low-key life with lots of walking, biking, paddling, and gardening in Hillsborough, NC.
