In Durham, people come together to create art that explores history and uplifts diverse narratives. Nowhere is this more obvious than at one of Durham’s newest developments—University Hill, or UHill for short. Completed in 2020, this mixed-use development is home to UHill Walls, a collection of 30+ murals throughout the 40,000 sq. ft. footprint of the complex. With dozens of local, national and international artists involved, UHill is the first development of its kind and the largest single collection of murals in the southeast. In 2021, the Triangle Business Journal recognized the complex with its “Redevelopment of the Year” award. Join this mobile tour to visit University Hill, diving deeper with a presentation from Hawthorne Retail about the conception and development of this 15-acre complex and why public art and community spaces were so important to their vision. En route to the complex, this tour will also introduce the group to a handful of other public art projects that have brought tangible positive impacts to the Durham community.
